Chicken!

Tok, Alaska

Temperature 48 - 52 and drizzly
Diesel:    $ 4.65

Got up this morning and drove The Taylor Highway / Highway 5 to the town of

Chicken is 67 miles off Alaska Highway and 79 from Tok on a partially paved road.  There is nothing between Chicken and the Highway.     Chicken was, and is still, a gold mining town.

They claim to have between 7 and 17 permanent residents with the population increasing while working mines and the summer visitors.

My first stop when getting into town:

This is the shopping center, Town Center:

Loved the store on the left.  However, we left with $257.00 less in the wallet.   Been doing lots of Christmas shopping the last couple of weeks.   Almost done!

This is the main part of town:

There are a couple of RV parks but when we head back that way in August we will stay at the nearby State RV park -  $5.00 for Federal Passport holders.   Of course no hook-ups but that is that same deal as in town but at a cost of $16.00.   $40.00 a night will get you 30 amp electric.  No water, no sewer.

The Town mascot with directional signs.

Being close to noon, lunch time.    Halibut, fries, potato salad, cole slaw and reindeer sausage.   Almost all done before I remembered to take a picture.   The halibut was super good.

Oh, should you be in the market for another bathroom at your place, they have some available for sale.

Beyond Chicken is the Top of the World Highway that takes you back to Yukon and into Dawson City.  All unpaved.  We asked about the drive.  The woman at the gift store said if the driver is experienced, there should be no problems.   She said that drive is more scenic than how we came into Alaska, with more chances of animal sightings.   It is about a 5 hour drive.  There is a free ferry that takes you across the river. The border crossing is only open 8 am to 8 pm.   That will surely fit into our schedule.  Guess we will give it a try.  It won't be until sometime mid to late August.

  1. I really think Chicken looks like a delightful place. If you look on the bottom right of my blog, you'll see 3 other bloggers that are in Alaska now too. They do a great job of describing that highway, and how long it took :-)
